10:22 Along with Hiram’s fleet, the king had a fleet of large merchant ships 1  that sailed the sea. Once every three years the fleet 2  came into port with cargoes of 3  gold, silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks. 4

27:12 “‘Tarshish 5  was your trade partner because of your abundant wealth; they exchanged silver, iron, tin, and lead for your products.

[10:22]  1 tn Heb “a fleet of Tarshish [ships].” This probably refers to large ships either made in or capable of traveling to the distant western port of Tarshish.

[10:22]  2 tn Heb “the fleet of Tarshish [ships].”

[10:22]  3 tn Heb “came carrying.”

[10:22]  4 tn The meaning of this word is unclear. Some suggest “baboons.”

[27:12]  5 sn Tarshish refers to a distant seaport sometimes believed to be located in southern Spain (others identified it as Carthage in North Africa). In any event it represents here a distant, rich, and exotic port which was a trading partner of Tyre.
